The Zcash Foundation has announced the results of a new FPGA acceleration project that started in January 2019. Using an FPGA system, which can be programmed to perform specific tasks similar to an ASIC, the project aims to speed up some parts of blockchain processing. Phase one focused specifically on the verification components of the blockchain while phase two will focus on accelerating zK-SNARK proofs. Improving zK-SNARKs, which are more complex and time consuming to process, could give a major boost to their adoption not just in Zcash ($ZEC) but also on many other networks that have been looking to implement the technology.
