The ECC Flight Plan for 2020

On Friday, Nov. 22, The Electric Coin Company, laid out its vision for the future of Zcash in a blog post. The company outlines its plan in three horizons: short term (0 - 6 months), near term (6 - 24 months), and long term (2 - 4 years).

In the short term, the ECC will prioritize interoperability and community enablement. This horizon will feature Zcash’s Blossom activation, the first production mobile wallets supporting shielded transactions, a second consensus compatible node implementation, zebra, developed by the Zcash Foundation, the proposal of a new upgrade process to increase community involvement, and Ethereum protocol improvements for Zcash into order to bridge ZEC into the Ethereum ecosystem.

The ECC’s near term plan is more speculative as it is dependent on the Zcash community’s decision on ECC funding leading up to the November 2020 halvening where, as currently specified in the protocol today, the Founder’s reward will cease. Nevertheless the team is confident the community will continue to fund the company and plans to activate Network upgrades 3 and 4 during this horizon in addition to dedicating attention to layer 1 scalability approaches, such as HALO.

In the long term, Zcash imagines itself emerging as “a mature, safe, private, permissionless store-of-value and medium-of-exchange.”

The company plans to post an update in the first quarter of 2020 assessing its execution and the strategic outcomes for this quarter's plan and present andy associated changes.

Why it matters:

  • With the looming decision over the Zcash Founder’s reward, which is set to end in November 2020, it is imperative that the Electric Coin Company makes its case for continued funding. Although the team is confident the community will support its continued funding, efforts to better increase transparency and better articulate its vision for the Zcash project will aid its case.
  • The post outlines the company’s continued commitment to reducing its role in Zcash governance and increasing community involvement in the project. This comes after the recent success in transitioning the Zcash trademark to the Zcash Foundation.
