Introduction

Giving away bitcoins has been more or less a hallmark of Bitcoin’s first decade. What surely amounts to tens of millions of dollars worth of bitcoins today were given out like candy for years by Andreas Antonopoulos, Roger Ver, and dozens of other evangelists. Gavin Andresen even introduced his (the first) as “something that sounds really dumb.” Unfortunately, these faucet sites morphed into advertising cesspools and eventually came to a grinding halt as their practicality faded. And as crypto prices climb, in-person give-away efforts diminish somewhat.

But these crypto giveaway of all types proved to be one of many early tools to on-board people to Bitcoin. Fortunately, a growing number of startups are pushing for free crypto to make a comeback.

Earning Free Bitcoin

Here's a short list of the easiest ways to get free bitcoin:

(1) Lolli is a rewards browser extension that gives users bitcoin for shopping online. Matt and Alex started Lolli because they wanted to make it as easy as humanly possible to get crypto, and few things are easier than giving it away when people buy stuff. I use Lolli, but most importantly my family and friends (who have never heard of sidechains or even registered with Coinbase) use it and now own bitcoin. (Even better: they don’t require, keep or sell user data.)

(2) Honeyminer is a software startup that built a simple desktop client for mining crypto with your CPU, similar to Nicehash. Very few Honeyminer users will be buying "lambos" anytime soon just from the satoshis they mine. But it’s a crazy-easy product to use and is “free” in the sense that your electricity costs from “mining” are nearly zero while you rake in a few thousand satoshis to play with.

(3) Tippin is another product that is receiving a lot of attention in crypto social media circles and makes giving away crypto extremely easy. It’s a browser extension for tipping on Twitter similar to ChangeTip back in the day. Messari uses Tippin to introduce research, news, and data products to a wider audience who, conveniently, snag a few thousands satoshis in the process.
