Coin Center's Director of Research Peter Van Valkenburgh explains how the growing number of technologists and entrepreneurs experimenting with public blockchain protocols need to have access to the same powerful regulatory tools that enabled the early Internet developers to shepherd that nascent technology into the world-changing juggernaut it has become. The Internet would probably still exist today without the light-touch regulation that was created in its early stages, Van Valkenburgh explains, but it would look drastically different. Similarly, public blockchains have the potential to be at least as disruptive and transformative as the Internet, and it needs the same regulatory safe harbors that mitigate bad actors and unleash creative productivity.
