Last Friday, Special Counsel Robert Mueller announced the indictment of 12 Russian operatives, charged with criminally interfering in the 2016 Presidential election. The indictment indicated that the hackers used Bitcoin ($BTC) to purchase domain names, server space, and VPN access. When considering Bitcoin's role in the indictment, a few key points are to be highlighted: 1. Bitcoin is far from an ideal tool for criminals as it is not anonymous 2. The root cause of cybercrime is not cryptocurrency but poor cybersecurity 3. Permissionless networks will inevitably be used for both good and bad purposes 4. Bitcoin was not critical in the hackers' success as they could have used many other forms of payment such as prepaid cards 5. Blockchain transactions can reveal the structure of organized crime rings and hackers are routinely caught and prosecuted thanks to blockchain transactions' high traceability.
