A Glimpse Into The Leading Categories Within The Deca-Billion NFT Industry

Feb 10, 2022 ⋅  5 min read

Avatar NFTs currently represent the largest sub-sector within NFTs, accounting for ~$8 billion of the $18 billion dollar market capitalization and more than the next three categories combined. Gaming, art, and collectibles follow next all within the $2.3 - $3.3 billion range which is reflective of where most consumer attention has been focused. Notably, classifying every NFT is challenging as some can feasibly cross into multiple categories. For example, if Nike issues an avatar project, does that count as IP or an avatar? As the NFT market evolves these categories will grow more defined. On a percentage basis, Avatar NFTs account for nearly half of the current market capitalization while most other sub-sectors (e.g. categories) represent single-digit percentages.
