Polygon FAQs

What is Polygon?

Polygon is a platform aiming to enhance Ethereum by providing a suite of Ethereum-scaling solutions. It focuses on increasing transaction speed and reducing costs without sacrificing security. Polygon does this by utilizing a technology called "Layer-2 scaling," where computational tasks are handled off the main Ethereum blockchain (Layer 1) but data can still leverage Ethereum’s security. It employs a mix of technologies, like Zero-Knowledge Rollups, which bundle transactions into a single proof to verify data quickly and cheaply. Polygon also offers tools for developers, like the Polygon Chain Development Kit, which helps create customized blockchain environments. As an interoperability protocol, Polygon allows various blockchains to connect, increasing efficiency and scalability in a decentralized ecosystem.

What is the history of Polygon?

The Polygon project, originally known as Matic Network, was founded in 2017. It was established by a group of co-founders who have been instrumental in its development:

  • Jaynti Kanani: Co-founder, who played a pivotal role in scaling the Ethereum platform through Polygon.
  • Sandeep Nailwal: Co-founder and Chief Business Officer, previously worked as a Consultant at Deloitte and headed technology and supply chain at Welspun Group.
  • Anurag Arjun: Co-founder, involved closely with the project's strategic direction.
  • Mihailo Bjelic: Co-founder, a systems engineer with experience in blockchain technology since 2017.

Polygon was created to address blockchain scaling and usability challenges, aiming to enhance Ethereum's capabilities and make it scalable for mass adoption.

Can I stake Polygon to earn rewards?

Yes, you can stake tokens in the Polygon project. As part of the Polygon ecosystem, the POL token, which was introduced in September 2024, serves as the primary staking and gas token for the Polygon network. Here's a breakdown of staking on Polygon:

  • Tokens Available for Staking: POL is the main token used for staking within the Polygon network. The previous token, MATIC, is being phased out in favor of POL.

  • Staking Involves:

    • POL holders can stake tokens to contribute to the security of the network and participate in governance.
    • Staking is facilitated through various platforms that integrate with the Polygon network, such as Ankr, which supports POL Liquid Staking.
  • Rewards for Stakers:

    • Stakers of POL receive rewards for their participation. The rewards typically come from network fees and may include yield percentages that can vary depending on network activity.
    • For instance, the staking protocol allows liquidation through dynamic exchange ratios, providing flexibility and potential yield optimization.

Overall, staking offers participants opportunities to support the network's operations while earning potential returns on their staked tokens.

Has Polygon experienced any hacks, exploits or outages?

There are no recent reports of notable hacks, exploits, or outages specifically targeting the native protocol or network of Polygon that involved significant monetary loss. The search results did not reveal any incident meeting these criteria in the context of significant monetary loss within the specified timeframe. If there were any, they are currently not documented in the sources available up to the date.

Is Polygon safe? How is it secured?

Polygon implements several unique security measures and has faced specific vulnerabilities, some of which have been addressed. Here's an overview:

Security Measures:

  1. zkEVM Mainnet Beta Security:

    • Polygon's zkEVM (zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine) took a two-stage security approach. Stage I involved a Security Council capable of rapidly upgrading the system. Stage II focused on decentralization with no privileged access source.
  2. Decentralization and Censorship Resistance:

    • To enhance resilience, users can force transactions to Ethereum Layer 1 if issues arise. This mechanism enhances censorship resistance and fosters a self-correcting network dynamic source.
  3. Multi-Sig Approach:

    • Utilizes a five-of-nine multi-signature wallet for critical functions, involving reputable organizations like Quickswap and Curve, ensuring that multiple parties must agree to any significant actions, enhancing security through distributed consensus source.
  4. Comprehensive Audits:

    • Multiple independent audits conducted by teams like Hexens and Spearbit stress-test all components. These audits have identified and rectified several vulnerabilities, ensuring robust protection before and during Mainnet Beta launches source.

Vulnerabilities:

  1. Critical Vulnerabilities in zkEVM:

    • Audits revealed several critical vulnerabilities, such as exploitation potential of ERC-777 features for re-entrancy attacks. All critical vulnerabilities identified have been fixed source.
  2. Emergency Hard Fork:

    • An emergency hard fork in 2022 was conducted to mitigate a significant security risk that could have resulted in a massive token loss. This was limited due to a quick response, although it raised debates on decentralization principles source.
  3. Low-Risk Vulnerabilities:

    • Some low-risk vulnerabilities related to handling network rollups and address inputs were identified. Polygon has addressed these in continuing development and fixes source.

Polygon continues to focus on balancing security with decentralization, addressing vulnerabilities through rigorous evaluations and proactive measures. The diverse safety features and frequent audits illustrate its commitment to maintaining a secure ecosystem.

Has Polygon been audited?

Here is a list of audits that the Polygon project has undergone, ordered chronologically with the most recent first:

  • Starky and zkEVM Kernel Security Audit by Least Authority - August 2024
  • Plonky3 Security Audit by Least Authority - July 2024
  • Polygon zkEVM Audit by Hexens - March 2023
  • Polygon Smart Contracts Audit by Hexens - October 2022
  • Polygon PoS Bridge Audit by PeckShield - July 2021
  • Polygon PoS Bridge Audit by Halborn - July 2021
  • Polygon Smart Contracts Audit by CertiK - April 2021
  • MATIC Token Contract Audit by Nomic Labs - May 2019

These audits reflect robust efforts to ensure the security and reliability of the Polygon ecosystem [source].

Polygon Profile

Polygon was initially launched as “Matic Network” in 2017. It was co-founded by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun, and Mihailo Bjelic to address blockchain scaling and usability issues. Some blockchains, like Ethereum, face higher latency and transaction costs. Layer-2 scaling solutions or external sidechain networks can act as load balances for networks that cannot inherently scale as user activity increases.

Matic Network (now Polygon PoS) launched its mainnet and core contracts on Ethereum in May 2020. At launch, all validators on the PoS chain were managed by the Matic Foundation, one of the entities behind the network's development and adoption. The foundation gradually relinquished its control by onboarding third-party validators throughout 2020 and began shutting down its nodes in February 2021.

Matic Network rebranded to Polygon in February 2021 to offer developers a suite of scaling solutions beyond its existing PoS chain. Since the pivot, Polygon acquired the ZK-rollup solution Hermez (Polygon Hermez) and the ZK-rollup solution Mir Protocol (Polygon Zero). Additionally, Polygon has worked on other initiatives, such as Polygon Miden and Polygon Nightfall, in an attempt to bring more privacy to Ethereum transactions. Based on a commercially reasonable search, only Polygon Miden is still in development (public testnet). The other initiatives have been discontinued, combined with others, or spun off as separate, independent projects.

Notable milestones in the project’s development include:

  • June 22, 2022 - The project team launched Polygon ID, allowing users to prove specific aspects of identity without revealing personal information. On Feb. 1, 2024, Polygon CEO Marc Borion announced that Polygon ID would be developed separately going forward by a 33-person team that was being spun out in the following months.
  • October 2022 - Polygon announced that Polygon Supernets, built with the Edge SDK and enabling quicker deployment of subchains like Avalanche’s subnets, would leverage Axelar for cross-chain asset transfers. Supernets has been rebranded to the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK) and is live.
  • March 2023 - Polygon launched the Polygon zkEVM on its mainnet beta in March 2023. According to Polygon Co-Founder Mihailo Bjelic, the Polygon Hermez, Zero, and Miden project teams contributed to its development.
  • June 2023 - Polygon Labs unveiled Polygon 2.0, a series of proposed upgrades to the Polygon ecosystem that aims to unify all Polygon protocols and blockchains using Zero-Knowledge (ZK) technology. As a part of the Polygon 2.0 roadmap, the project team plans on upgrading the Polygon PoS network to a zkEVM Validium network that shares security with Ethereum. Although, based on a commercially reasonable search, the upgrade has not yet been implemented.
  • September 2023 - “Phase 0” of Polygon 2.0 began, with the following Polygon Improvement Proposals (PIPs) being released: PIP-17, PIP-18, and PIP-19. These PIPs collectively outline the initial steps of Polygon 2.0.
  • October 2023 - The POL token went live on Ethereum Mainnet. As per the blog post announcing the token’s mainnet launch, “this token upgrade does not change active systems on either the Polygon PoS or Polygon zkEVM networks.” While implementation for PIP-17, PIP-18, and PIP-19 was estimated to begin in Q4 2023, a commercially reasonable search found that none of the proposed changes are live.
  • January 2024 - Polygon Labs unveiled the “Aggregation Layer” (AggLayer) as part of Polygon 2.0. AggLayer is a decentralized protocol designed for "near-instant atomic cross-chain transactions" and for “unifying liquidity across the Polygon ecosystem.” As of May 2024, the first components, including a unified bridge to Ethereum and a bridgeAndCall() library of Solidity contracts, are live on the mainnet. Additionally, Polygon zkEVM is the only chain connected to this protocol. A commercially reasonable search found no further updates published regarding the AggLayer.
  • February 2024 - Polygon Labs announced the release of a Type 1 upgrade for the zkEVM, enabling any existing Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) chain to become a ZK (Zero-knowledge) Layer-2 chain and integrate with the AggLayer. The Type 1 prover is open-source, dual-licensed under MIT and Apache 2.0, and its code is available on GitHub.

In May 2024, Sandeep Nailwal was appointed as Chief Business Officer.

In October 2025, Polygon partnered with Standard Chartered for AlloyX, a regulated tokenized money market fund that links DeFi stablecoin yields to traditional finance. With Polygon-based looping, AlloyX's tokenized money market fund (RYT) aims to bridge DeFi liquidity with a transparent, audited cash management layer.

In October 2025, VanEck's Polygon ETN and 21shares Polygon ETP were the main instruments offering institutional clients exposure to Polygon.
