Etherfi FAQs

What is Etherfi?

Etherfi is a project focused on Ethereum staking, allowing users to participate in staking without needing the full 32 ETH typically required to run a validator node. It facilitates this by using a solution called EigenLayer, which lets Ether holders stake their ETH on Ethereum and restake it on EigenLayer to secure various modules like consensus protocols. The primary product of Etherfi is the eETH token, which is a rebasing ERC-20 token; this means its supply can automatically adjust to reflect earned staking rewards. Etherfi emphasizes non-custodial staking, meaning users maintain control over their staking keys, unlike some other projects where nodes manage these keys. The platform also offers a DeFi strategy vault, using protocols to earn yield on various assets including eETH and other Ethereum-backed tokens.

What is the history of Etherfi?

EtherFi was founded in 2022 as a decentralized and non-custodial liquid staking platform. It allows users to earn rewards for staking cryptocurrency while maintaining custody over their assets. The company is headquartered at 90 North Church Street in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands [Source: CB Insights].

The founders and key figures of EtherFi include:

  • Mike Silagadze: Co-Founder and CEO. He is also the CEO of Gadze Finance, a cryptocurrency quantitative trading fund; Founder and CEO of Top Hat, an education application; and a Venture Partner at Ripple Ventures. Previously, he was a developer at Miovision Technologies [Source: Team Documentation].

  • Rok Kopp: Co-Founder and Chief Growth Officer. He is also the Chief Client Officer at Gadze Finance, a Limited Partner at GTMfund, and a member of Revenue Collective. Previously, Kopp was the Chief Revenue Officer at Obsidian HR and Apto [Source: Team Documentation].

Can I stake Etherfi to earn rewards?

Yes, you can natively stake Ethereum (ETH) in the Etherfi project through their liquid restaking protocol. Here's how it works:

  • Stakable Tokens: EtherFi primarily allows users to stake Ethereum (ETH). When users stake their ETH, they receive an equivalent amount of eETH, a liquid representation of their staked ETH.
  • Staking Process: This involves the integration with EigenLayer, allowing for enhanced staking benefits and liquidity. Traditional staking involves locking up assets, but EtherFi's method provides liquidity through eETH.
  • Rewards for Stakers:
    • eETH holders earn rewards from both the Ethereum execution and consensus layers, as well as EigenLayer restaking rewards.
    • EtherFi also introduces T-NFT and B-NFT tokens to incentivize stakers and node operators.
    • Users can earn additional returns through EtherFi's Automatic Restaking (AR) feature and participate in governance using the EtherFi governance token, ETHFI.

EtherFi's system provides a non-custodial and decentralized staking environment, where users retain control of their keys and assets while still earning rewards.

Has Etherfi experienced any hacks, exploits or outages?

Based on a commercially reasonable search, no major vulnerabilities, hacks, or attacks have impaired EtherFi itself. The information reviewed indicates no significant exploits or security breaches impacting the Etherfi protocol or network directly source.

Is Etherfi safe? How is it secured?

Etherfi, a decentralized liquid staking protocol, employs several security measures and unique strategies to safeguard its operations, while also highlighting areas where vulnerabilities have surfaced.

Security Measures:
  • Hardware Authentication: Etherfi utilizes hardware authentication for account recovery, adding an additional layer of security to safeguard accounts against unauthorized access and compromised processes. This was instrumental in thwarting recent domain hijacking attempts source.

  • Enhanced Security Infrastructure: Their partnership with security firms such as Seal911, Doppel, Ethena, and Distrust enhances their ability to respond quickly to threats source.

  • Omnichain Fungible Token Standard (OFT): For their wrapped ETH (weETH), Etherfi leverages the OFT standard by LayerZero, which facilitates seamless and secure asset transfers across different chains, significantly reducing the chances of transaction failures source.

  • Decentralized Verifier Networks (DVNs): Deployed for message verification in the multichain ecosystem, utilizing DVNs from Nethermind and LayerZero Labs, which adds decentralization and robustness to message verification source.

  • Rate Limiting for Minting and Bridging: Etherfi implements rate-limiting for minting and bridging processes, which helps in preventing congestion and potential abuse during the transfers of weETH across different chains source.

  • Collaborative Security Approach: Regular audits and a bug bounty program through platforms like Hats Finance ensure continuous improvement and attention to potential vulnerabilities source.

Unique Features:
  • Stablecoin Integration for Restaking: Etherfi's collaboration with Ethena allows users to participate in liquid restaking using the new eUSD token, showcasing a novel integration of stablecoins in staking protocols source.
Recent Vulnerabilities:
  • Domain Registrar Attack: An attempted domain account takeover involving their registrar, Gandi.net, highlighted potential vulnerabilities in domain security, though no funds were lost source.

  • Access Control Concerns: While specific to the broader crypto industry, access control vulnerabilities have been significant across DeFi, emphasizing the need for robust key management practices and incident response protocols source.

Despite these challenges, Etherfi maintains a strong focus on security through proactive measures and strategic partnerships, underscoring their commitment to safeguarding user assets and operational integrity.

Has Etherfi been audited?

Etherfi Profile

Mike Silagadze and Rok Kopp founded EtherFi in 2022 to build a non-custodial ETH staking protocol that “allows stakers to retain control of their keys while delegating validator operations to node operators.”

The following key protocol developments have occurred per the project’s roadmap and social profiles:

  • In March 2023, EtherFi launched its beta application.
  • On May 3, 2023, EtherFi launched its mainnet, which included delegated staking of ETH to whitelisted validators.
  • In June 2023, EtherFi opened the application to non-whitelisted users for delegated ETH staking and self-custody of validator keys. The project team also launched the Ether.Fan NFT collection, whereby users could stake ETH to mint a fan NFT representing the underlying staked ETH position and accrued staking rewards. Of note, the 10,000 mint cap has been reached, so no more NFTs can be minted.
  • In August 2023, EtherFi partnered with Obol Labs to launch its first validator using Distributed Validator Technology (DVT). This concept was partially automated into the protocol in August 2023.
  • In October 2023, EtherFi’s smart contracts were open-sourced.
  • On Nov. 15, 2023, eETH fully launched, allowing anyone (not just previously whitelisted users) to mint/redeem eETH for ETH at a 1:1 ratio by staking/unstaking via the application.
  • On March 18, 2024, the ERC-20 ETHFI token launched when it became claimable by wallet addresses that qualified for EtherFi’s Airdrop Season 1. On the same day, the project team launched Liquid, EtherFi’s DeFi strategy vault (provided by Seven Seas) that allocates eETH, weETH, and WETH deposits across a variety of third-party applications, allowing depositors to earn yield from the underlying strategy.

Notable upcoming roadmap items include:

  • Implement EtherFi governance (detailed here) - Offchain governance via Snapshot, onchain governance via Agora, and “fully automating and ossifying governance function” thereafter.
  • As of March 18, 2024, the project team manually reviews applications for prospective users to run a node. On Oct. 13, 2023, the team announced it intends to release a fully automated integration for users to operate nodes “free and clear of ether.fi and Obol’s management and assistance” in March 2024.
  • Deploying Cash, EtherFi’s intended feature for allowing a user to spend or borrow against EtherFi deposits by using a mobile app MPC wallet that connects to the user’s EtherFi account, as well as a credit card that will be able to load the user’s EtherFi balance.
    • Notably, the project team intends to develop a Layer-2 “with built-in handling for payment disputes” as part of this feature.
