Ethena USDe Project Update

Currently Interesting

Ethena Pay has launched Earn+, a one-tap feature that routes users' dollar balances into an external leveraged DeFi vault targeting up to 12% APY 1. The vault, managed by Upshift and Steakhouse, supplies USDe as collateral on Aave v4 (Avalanche), borrows USDT, and repeatedly swaps back into USDe to achieve roughly 11-fold leverage 1. There is no lock-up, with withdrawals processed within 24 hours, though tiered allocation caps apply ($20k Standard, $50k Pro, $200k VIP) against an overall vault capacity of $4.5 million 1. The advertised 12% is a target rather than a guarantee — rising USDT borrowing costs or shifts in the USDe/USDT rate differential can sharply reduce returns, and the leveraged position can be liquidated near its margin 1. Importantly, Earn+ is a third-party product: Ethena Pay only provides the interface, does not custody assets, and users must accept Upshift/Steakhouse terms and associated smart-contract risks 1. This matters because it extends USDe's utility into consumer-facing yield products, but it also introduces leverage and counterparty risk that could affect sentiment if the strategy underperforms.

Get Caught Up

Custodian Attestations (September). Ethena published its sixth attestation report from all integrated custodians, confirming that USDe's backing assets reside off-exchange within institutional custodial solutions 2. The report showed total backing assets of $2.579 billion, with the Reserve Fund bringing the overall total to $2.706 billion — a backing level of 101.84% of USDe supply 2. Monthly attestations will continue to be shared in the Ethena governance forum, with plans to expand verification through additional external parties 2.
Stablecoin-as-a-Service and Backing Updates. Ethena Labs published updates on its whitelabel stablecoin offering and on ETH stability and backing assets, signaling continued expansion of its product suite beyond the core USDe token 34. These developments matter because they broaden Ethena's revenue base and position USDe's infrastructure as a service for other issuers.
Ecosystem Expansion via Hyperliquid. Ethena's ecosystem continues to deepen around Hyperliquid, including the HyENA USDe-margined perpetuals DEX and a proposed USDH Hyperliquid-first stablecoin 5. Perpetual futures currently account for only about 11% of USDe backing, with the remainder allocated to stablecoin reserves and DeFi lending positions — a diversification strategy aimed at reducing concentration risk 5.

Biggest Stories of 2025

  • The HyENA Opportunity — Ethena outlined extending USDe's backing to include commodity basis trades, starting with tokenised gold perpetual futures, while also detailing the HyENA USDe-margined perpetuals DEX on Hyperliquid's HIP-3 platform and a proposed USDH stablecoin 5. This remains relevant as the blueprint for diversifying USDe's backing and expanding its ecosystem. (December 22, 2025)
  • Custodian Attestations of Assets Backing USDe: December — Ethena released its ninth attestation report, confirming USDe supply of 5.968 billion and total backing assets of $5.987 billion, equating to 101.16% of supply including the Reserve Fund 6. This established the monthly transparency cadence that continues today. (December 1, 2025)
  • Ethena Partnership with Nunchi — Ethena partnered with Nunchi to support perpetual markets linked to yield benchmarks such as real-world asset rates, dividends, and ETH staking yields, with Nunchi's initial markets using USDe as the quote asset 7. This expanded USDe's role as margin collateral within the Hyperliquid ecosystem. (November 21, 2025)
  • USDe Redeem for Dislocations on Secondary Markets — Ethena Labs Research proposed using up to 1.2% of USDe's total backing assets (approximately $95 million) to buy and burn discounted USDe below $1 during severe market dislocations, following the October 10 depeg event 8. This mechanism aims to stabilize USDe's secondary market price during abnormal liquidity events. (November 17, 2025)
  • Ethena Statement on USDe Price Volatility — Following broader market liquidations, USDe experienced secondary market price volatility, but Ethena confirmed mint and redeem functions remained fully operational and the asset stayed overcollateralized 9. This event underscored the resilience of the protocol's redemption infrastructure. (October 10, 2025)
  • Ethena and UR Global Partnership — Ethena partnered with UR Global to integrate USDe into its neobank platform, enabling users to hold USDe with up to 5% APY and zero-fee fiat conversions, with a Mastercard debit card planned 10. This marked a step toward real-world spending utility for USDe. (October 7, 2025)
  • Ethereal Mainnet Alpha Launch — Ethereal's Mainnet Alpha went live alongside Season One: Epoch 2, supporting USDe deposits for perpetual futures trading, with the top 100 waitlist users gaining early access 11. • USDe on TON — Following the TON partnership, USDe went live on TON via LayerZero and Stargate integrations 14. This delivered on the cross-chain expansion promise. (May 1, 2025)
  • Ethena App Updates — Ethena updated its app to allow swapping any stablecoin to USDe, bridging USDe to supported chains, and onboarding fiat directly via an Alchemy Pay integration 15. This improved user accessibility and onboarding. (April 18, 2025)
  • Plasma x Ethena — Ethena and the Plasma Foundation announced an ecosystem partnership making USDe available on Plasma's mainnet beta on day one 16. This positioned USDe within a new payments-focused chain. (April 15, 2025)
  • USDe and sUSDe on BNB Chain — USDe and sUSDe became available on BNB Chain as LayerZero OFTs 17. This expanded USDe's multi-chain footprint. (April 4, 2025)
  • USDe and sUSDe on Aptos — Ethena began deploying strategically on MoveVM chains, starting with Aptos, making USDe and sUSDe available via LayerZero's OFT standard 18. This marked Ethena's expansion beyond EVM-compatible chains. (February 25, 2025)
  • Ethena USDe and sUSDe Direct Exposure to the Spark Liquidity Layer — Following an executive proposal, USDe and sUSDe were onboarded into the Spark Liquidity Layer with defined minting, burning, depositing, and withdrawing parameters 19. This integrated USDe into the Sky/Maker ecosystem's liquidity infrastructure. (January 13, 2025)
  • iUSDe Token — Ethena founder G introduced the iUSDe token, a version of sUSDe designed for traditional finance with token-level transfer restrictions to comply with regulatory requirements, enabling use within legacy financial systems through isolated SPVs 20. This represented Ethena's bridge into traditional finance, though no official launch timeline was provided. (January 3, 2025)

Ethena USDe FAQs

What is Ethena USDe?

Ethena USDe is a synthetic US Dollar (USD)-pegged stablecoin created by Ethena Labs. It's designed to function as a censorship-resistant, scalable, and stable internet bond. This stablecoin is different from traditional ones because it is backed by various types of collateral, including cryptocurrencies like stETH (staked Ethereum), WBETH, mETH, WETH, USDT, USDC, and other assets. To maintain its stability, it uses a delta-neutral hedging strategy. This involves holding assets in a way that minimizes exposure to price volatility, such as opening a short position on Ethereum to hedge against potential decreases in the asset's value. Users can mint USDe by depositing approved collateral, and whitelisted counterparties can redeem it at a one-to-one rate with USD-pegged assets. Overall, Ethena USDe is part of an effort to innovate within the stablecoin space, offering a decentralized and scalable alternative to fiat-backed options.

What is the history of Ethena USDe?

Ethena Labs was founded by Guy Young in July 2023, focusing on creating a censorship-resistant, scalable, and stable crypto-native "Internet Bond." The Ethena USDe, a synthetic US Dollar, was launched to the public on February 19, 2024.

Can I stake Ethena USDe to earn rewards?

Yes, you can stake tokens in the Ethena USDe project, specifically by staking USDe tokens. Here’s a breakdown of staking within the Ethena USDe ecosystem:

  • Staking Process: When you stake USDe tokens, they are transferred to the staking contract where you receive sUSDe (staked USDe) in return. As you continue staking, your sUSDe earns additional USDe rewards. This staking process utilizes the StakedUSDe smart contract, which conforms to the ERC4626 Token Vault standard for composability and reward accrual.

  • Rewards and Benefits:

    • Stakers of USDe can earn rewards in various potential ways:
      • Rewards are paid in USDe, with current yields for sUSDe averaging around 3.72% source.
      • Rewards are accrued from a combination of ETH staking, yields from perpetual and futures markets, and fixed rewards on liquid stablecoins.
      • A 6% APY is offered on USDe holdings on platforms like CoinList without the need for traditional staking [CoinList offer source].
      • In partnership with Allstake, users staking USDe and sUSDe can earn Allstake Points and Ethena Sats source.
  • Considerations: There's a mandatory 7-day cooldown period from when you request to unstake your sUSDe until you can retrieve your USDe. If secondary markets exist, you may have the option to sell sUSDe during this period, though Ethena Labs does not assure the creation of such markets.

For those engaging with Ethena's staking options, it provides a way to earn passive income while participating in the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem through various reward structures and the innovative use of synthetic dollars.

Has Ethena USDe experienced any hacks, exploits or outages?

Ethena USDe has not suffered any direct hacks or exploits on its native protocol or network where a significant amount of money was lost. However, there was an indirect issue related to a hack on the Bybit exchange. In February 2025, Bybit experienced a $1.4 billion hack that affected various cryptocurrencies. Although Ethena USDe had about $30 million exposure in derivatives related to Bybit, Ethena Labs assured that their stablecoin remained solvent. USDe's reserves, held in off-exchange custody, were sufficient to cover the potential losses, and the protocol emphasized that no collateral was held directly on Bybit source.

Is Ethena USDe safe? How is it secured?

The Ethena USDe project employs several security measures to ensure the safety and integrity of its system. Here are key measures and recent developments aligned with their strategy:

Security Measures:
  1. Whitelisting Mechanism:

    • Only whitelisted user wallet addresses can mint and redeem USDe, preventing unauthorized access and ensuring only verified actors can interact with these functions Ethena Documentation.
  2. Off-Exchange Custody:

    • All collateral assets backing USDe are held in off-exchange custody with Copper Clearloop, mitigating exchange-related risks [Messari News].
  3. Multi-Signature Security:

    • Changes to whitelisted addresses require multi-sig transactions by Ethena and external parties, increasing trust and security Ethena Documentation.
  4. Air-Gapped Key Management:

    • Keys for mint/redeem smart contracts are generated securely in an air-gapped environment, minimizing unauthorized access risks [Ethena Documentation].
  5. Real-Time Reserve Verification:

    • Integration with Chaos Labs' Edge Proof of Reserves Oracles ensures real-time verification of reserves using zero-knowledge proofs, enhancing transparency and risk management [Messari News].
  6. Hedged Collateral:

    • Utilizes delta-neutral derivative positions to hedge against volatility, using a cash-and-carry strategy with assets like bitcoin and ether futures [Messari News].
Unique Vulnerabilities:
  • Regulatory Challenges:

    • The project faced legal hurdles in Germany, with BaFin halting the offering of USDe due to deficiencies in the token's authorization process [Messari News].
  • Domain Compromise Incident:

    • Ethena Labs experienced a security breach involving their domain registrar, impacting the website but not the underlying protocol [Messari Legal & Regulatory].
  • Market Volatility:

    • The asset has shown an adaptive market strategy with increased futures trading volume observed in late March 2025, likely responding to market conditions [Chart Data]. Despite volatility, it maintains a stable price, closely pegged to USD.

Despite these vulnerabilities, Ethena USDe's security framework effectively combines traditional financial safeguards with decentralized finance's innovative resilience, making it robust against diverse risk scenarios.

Has Ethena USDe been audited?

The Ethena USDe project has undergone several audits as part of a multi-phased program to ensure security and reliability. Here is a list of the audits in chronological order, with the most recent first:

Ethena USDe Profile

Ethena was founded by Guy Young and announced in July 2023, aiming to be a crypto-native “Internet Bond” that is censorship-resistant, scalable, and stable. USDe launched to the public on Feb. 19, 2024. The same day, Epoch 1 of Ethena’s Shard Campaign was launched. The Shard Campaign was set to conclude with an “airdrop” in the earlier of either (1) three months' time or (2) when USDe’s supply reached 1.00 billion.

One week after the Shard Campaign’s launch, Epoch 2 began, with USDe’s supply reaching 600.00 million shortly after. Additional integrations and shard multiplier changes continued to be made as USDe’s supply reached 800.00 million and 900.00 million. Ultimately, USDe reached a total token supply of 1.00 billion on March 13, 2024, though the project team later announced that the Shard Campaign would end on April 1, 2024.

The ENA governance token was launched one day later, on April 2, 2024.

Upon ENA’s launch, Ethena’s Sats Campaign began. With the launch of the campaign, Ethena also announced that it plans to introduce BTC as a supported USDe collateral asset. The Sats Campaign is set to conclude in the earlier of either (1) five months’ time on Sept. 2nd, 2024, or (2) when USDe’s supply reaches 5.00 billion.

In February 2025, Bloomberg reported that Ethena raised $100M to finance a similar token targeted at traditional financial institutions.

In March 2025, Post-GENIUS Act, USDe and USDtb were positioned for mainstream integration by banks, payment processors, and on-chain treasuries. March also brought the introduction of Converge by Ethena Labs and Securitize.

In June 2025, the Converge team has shared a blog post outlining Converge's technical specifications and roadmap.

In September 2025, Ethena has partnered with Binance to embed USDe across its entire platform of over 280M users.

In October 2025, during a wide crypto sell-off, USDe briefly depegged to $0.65 on Binance before quickly returning to $1.00.
