cETH (Compound Ether) Project Update

Get Caught Up

Compound V2 Deprecation Rejected, Then Revisited. In October 2025, an onchain vote to deprecate Compound V2 — the version of the protocol that hosts cETH — was rejected, with 50.47% of votes cast against it 1. The proposal, which originated from a Gauntlet forum discussion citing declining usage and systemic risks in V2's pooled-collateral model, would have paused all new deposits and borrows while raising reserve factors to 100% across all V2 markets 2. A revised version of the proposal was subsequently put forward in December 2025, seeking the same pause on borrows and mints plus 100% reserve factors, and this second attempt passed with 99.99% support 34. This matters directly for cETH holders because cETH is a cToken issued on Compound V2, so the deprecation path determines whether the market remains open to new supply and how interest is redirected.
Governance Modernization Completed. Compound executed a significant governance modernization in 2025, upgrading from the GovernorBravo framework to OpenZeppelin's modern Governor implementation and activating the SEAL legal framework for whitehat interventions 5. The upgrade proposal passed with 100% of votes in favor in early February 2025 6. This matters because it changes how future proposals — including any further changes affecting V2 markets and cETH — are submitted and executed.
Community Multisig Mandate Extended. The Compound DAO approved Proposal 510 to extend the mandate, funding, and structure of the Community Multisig and Proposal Guardian through the end of 2026, with $157,500 in signer compensation approved 7. The multisig retains emergency pause authority, borrow-cap management for V2, and the ability to cancel malicious proposals 7. This is relevant to cETH users because the multisig's borrow-cap authority over V2 markets is one of the remaining levers of active management over the market where cETH is used.

Biggest Stories of 2025

  • Compound V2 Deprecation Proposal v2 Approved (December 7, 2025). The second deprecation proposal passed with 99.99% of votes in favor, formally winding down new activity on V2 markets where cETH is issued 4.
  • Compound Foundation Reimbursement (Prop 513) (December 8, 2025). The community approved transferring $1,096,535 USDC to the Compound Foundation to reimburse 30,500 COMP it had temporarily provided to the Comptroller to enable execution of Proposals 504 and 510 8.
  • Delegate COMP Yield Strategy Tokens to the Compound Foundation (Prop 511) (December 3, 2025). The DAO approved delegating undeployed COMP from the COMP Yield Strategy to the Foundation to strengthen governance participation, a purely governance-related change 9.
  • Renewing the Community Multisig (Prop 510) (December 3, 2025). The DAO extended the Community Multisig and Proposal Guardian mandate through end-2026, preserving emergency pause authority and V2 borrow-cap management 7.
  • Compound V2 Deprecation Proposal v2 Proposed (December 4, 2025). Voting began on the revised deprecation proposal to pause borrows and mints on all V2 assets and set reserve factors to 100% 3.
  • Compound V2 Deprecation Approved (Rejected) (October 22, 2025). The first deprecation vote concluded and was rejected with 50.47% against 1.
  • Compound V2 Deprecation Approved (October 17, 2025). Onchain voting on the initial deprecation proposal began, scheduled to end October 20, 2025 10.
  • Compound V2 Deprecation Proposed (September 19, 2025). Gauntlet published a forum discussion proposing V2 deprecation, citing declining usage and systemic risks, with a staged timeline including a Snapshot vote, UI banner, and onchain proposal 2.
  • Unichain Deployment (May 13, 2025). Compound Labs announced that Compound is now live on Unichain, expanding the protocol's deployment footprint 11.
  • Phase 2: Frontend for Compound <> Morpho <> Polygon Collaboration (MIP 99) (March 25, 2025). A proposal requested $80,000 to update the collaboration frontend, adding an AAVE v3 position and liquidity migrator and leveraged position features 12.
  • Governance Contracts Upgrade Approved (February 2, 2025). The proposal to upgrade governance contracts from GovernorBravo to OpenZeppelin's Governor implementation passed with 100% of votes in favor 6.
  • Governance Contracts Upgrade Proposed (January 30, 2025). Onchain voting began on the governance contract upgrade, which introduced a moratorium period during which no new proposals could be submitted on the old Governor contract 13.
